A 2015 nationwide NZCER survey of parents highlighted the fact that the role of the school is no longer one of just meeting a core curriculum. Over 80% of respondents thought it important that their child get a qualification, be prepared for career/work life, and have opportunities with digital technology, sports or physical activity, and involvement in the arts.

The Opportunities Project is about utilising the skills and funds of the community to ensure that students attending Waimate High School have access to diverse opportunities that match or exceed those available at other schools. ”
